"What is happening? Today there is a great silence over the earth, a great silence, and stillness, a great silence because the King sleeps; the earth was in terror and was still, because God slept in the flesh and raised up those who were sleeping from the ages. God has died in the flesh, and the underworld has trembled." - from an ancient homily for Holy Saturday (read the full excerpt here) |
Hey guys! (I am, in fact, alive, I've just been super quiet...and I'm choosing the quietest day of the Liturgical Year to pipe up, apparently.)
Anywho. Happy Holy Week. Happy Holy Saturday. I hope your Holy Thursday was blessed and your Good Friday filled with an awareness of Christ's overwhelming love for you. And I hope your Easter morning breaks in with all the peace and splendor and joy proper to that day of all days.
I wanted to share some things that I love that are appropriate for the day. Two, to be precise. Unless you count the picture of Jesus delivering the souls from the jaws of death, which I find rather delightful.
THE SHROUD OF TURIN
A POEM
Suddenly and thinned
Like mist upon the moors
Before the wind.
A shining face and said:
"He will be coming soon.
The Son of God is dead;
He died this afternoon."
All souls.
Save one old man who seemed
Not even to have heard.
And Moses, standing,
Hushed them all to ask
If any had a welcome song prepared.
If not, would David take the task?
And if they cared
Could not the three young children sing
The Benedicite, the canticle of praise
They made when God kept them from perishing
In the fiery blaze?
Stilling Moses' words.
No one could speak, remembering
The first fresh flowers,
The little singing birds.
Still others thought of fields new ploughed
Or apple trees
Or some, the way a dried bed fills
With water
Laughing down green hills.
On bright blue seas,
The one old man who had not stirred
Splendid as the morning sun and fair
As only God is fair.
And they, confused with joy,
Knelt to adore
Seeing that he wore
Five crimson stars
He never had before.
None toned a psalm, or raised a greeting song.
A silent man along
Of all that throng found tongue--
Not any other.
Close to His heart
When the embrace was done,
Old Joseph said, "How is Your Mother,
How is Your Mother, Son?"

A blessed Holy Saturday to you, Megan! And ahhhh, that poem. <3 Makes me cry every time. It's just so beautiful — thank you for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nicole! YES you know the poem!!! I love the lines "And there he was, splendid as the morning sun and fair as only God is fair." <3
DeleteAGH. That one ancient homily is my favorite part of Tenebrae, and I was SO happy to get to hear it again this year. <3
ReplyDeleteAnd awww, that poem is so beautiful! Thank you for sharing. :) I think we don't think often of the fact that Joseph would have been in limbo/the waiting place, as well? I know I've thought about the fact that John the Baptist would have been, but never Joseph...
ACK IT'S FROM TENEBRAE. THAT's where it is in the liturgy. Good stuff. (I /will/ make it back to Tenebrae one of these years. I've only been once but it was so lovely.)
DeleteRight? It's a pretty unique premise for a poem and such a good thing to think on.
